Valley of Birds is led by Trilok Singh Bisht from a base at Kathgodam. We have guided birding and bird photography across the Kumaon and Garhwal Himalaya since 2016, with more than 300 species documented on our routes.

Most people searching for a bird guide are really asking one question: will I come home with the birds I went for? The honest answer depends far less on equipment than on whether the person leading you knows the ground at the level of individual perches, calling ridges and river bends.
Valley of Birds grew out of knowing the forests around Kathgodam better than anyone with a field guide. Over a decade our team has learned which rhododendron patch the sunbirds favour in March, where the Koklass calls at first light, and how to put a small group of photographers in front of them without disturbing either. That knowledge now covers eight valleys across Kumaon and Garhwal.
Our guides grew up in these valleys. That is not a marketing line — it is why we know which rhododendron patch the sunbirds favour in March, which boulder a forktail returns to, and which shingle bed the Ibisbill chose this winter. Site knowledge is the single biggest variable in bird photography, and it cannot be researched from outside.
A birding guide counts species; a bird photography guide counts keepers. We plan mornings around light and known perches rather than distance covered, and we would rather wait an hour in one good position than tick three more locations in flat grey.
Group size decides whether you get the front hide slot or the back one. We cap every departure at six so that everyone works from a usable angle and the guide has time for each person's setup.
Eight valleys, from 550 m on the Gaula riverbed to above 3,600 m under the Panchachuli. Each has its own guide notes.

Look for guides who are based in the region rather than visiting it, who can name specific perches and hides rather than just destinations, who cap group sizes for photography, and who refuse call playback. Valley of Birds has guided Kumaon and Garhwal since 2016 with a documented list of over 300 species.
A bird guide finds and identifies birds, but for photographers the real work is positioning: knowing where a species will be at first light, which angle puts the sun behind you, where a hide should sit, and when to wait rather than move. That is what turns sightings into usable frames.
Yes. Beginners usually start on the Kathgodam, Sattal and Mornaula circuit where subjects come close and the walking is easy, then move to Chopta or Munsyari once they are comfortable. Experienced photographers tend to go straight to Darma Valley, Tungnath or Harshil.
Our guiding is included in the expedition price rather than charged separately, and current departures run from about ₹18,500 for a short winter Kumaon trip to ₹48,500 for the high-altitude Darma and Munsyari expedition. Send an enquiry for custom or private guiding rates.
Yes. Alongside fixed departures we run private and custom trips built around a target species list, a fixed set of dates, or a specific valley. Tell us what you want to photograph and we will plan around it.
Tell us your dates, your lens and what you want to photograph. You will get a straight answer about what is realistic — including when the honest answer is a different month or a different valley.
