Mandal is the mid-elevation forest below Chopta — the place to photograph Scarlet Finch, forktails and niltavas in dense oak and deodar.
Mandal sits at around 1,500 m on the Gopeshwar–Chopta road, and it is the reason serious photographers stop before climbing to the meadows. The valley holds moist temperate oak forest cut by a clean stream, and that combination produces a species list that Chopta simply does not have: Scarlet Finch, forktails, niltavas and a genuinely good chance at owls.
The birding here is close-quarters and shade-heavy — this is where fast glass and patience earn their keep. We work fixed stream perches for Little and Spotted Forktail and Brown Dipper, and the roadside oak for the mixed flocks that build through the morning. The valley's rich moist-temperate canopy offers consistent sightings of Scarlet Finch, laughingthrushes, flycatchers and mixed feeding flocks throughout the season.
Little Forktail, Spotted Forktail, Brown Dipper, Plumbeous Water Redstart on fixed perches.
Roadside oak with mixed flocks — Scarlet Finch, Rufous Sibia, Whiskered Yuhina, Maroon Oriole.
Steeper broadleaf forest for cupwings, laughingthrushes and Grey-winged Blackbird.
Dense oak-rhododendron forest productive for Scarlet Finch, niltavas, barbets and mixed canopy flocks.
A working list of the species our groups target here, grouped by habitat and photographic rhythm.
Mandal is known for mid-elevation oak forest species that are hard to find higher up — Scarlet Finch, Maroon Oriole, three forktail species along the stream, niltavas, and a strong cast of owls including Tawny Fish Owl.
Mandal is roughly 25 km below Chopta on the Gopeshwar road, about an hour and a half of slow driving with birding stops. Nearly every Chopta expedition we run includes at least one full morning at Mandal.
Mandal offers rich mid-elevation moist temperate oak forest where birders can photograph Scarlet Finch, three species of forktails along clean mountain streams, niltavas and nocturnal owls in a single destination.
No permit is required for Mandal village and the roadside forest. Some adjoining Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary sections have entry formalities, which our guides handle on the day.
